Sechenov University is a leading medical research university in Russia, operating since 1758. Under the leadership of Rector Petr Vitalyevich Glybochko, the University actively develops translational research and introduces advanced medical technologies. The University structure includes modern research centers and laboratories that promote the integration of science, education and practice.

Today, more than 26 thousand students study at Sechenov University, including over 5.5 thousand foreigners from 90 countries. Among the 8.2 thousand employees of the University are 46 academicians of the Russian Academy of Sciences, more than 2.2 thousand candidates and doctors of science. The University has the largest Clinical Center in Russia and Eastern Europe, which employs over 5 thousand employees. The center provides specialized and high-tech care in more than 50 profiles. More than 500 thousand patients receive care annually.  

Today, Sechenov University is the only Russian university in the top 250 of the QS world ranking in the field of "Medicine" and in the top 100 in the field of "Pharmacy and Pharmacology", as well as the best Russian university in the field of "Medicine" of the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy and the only medical university in Russia that is included in the annual Forbes rating of "100 best Russian universities". In 2024, it entered the top 20 Russian universities in the RAEX rating ("RAEX-Analytics"), taking 15th place.

The initiator of Sechenov University's accession to the Orphan Consortium was the Institute of Translational Medicine and Biotechnology under the leadership of Vadim Tarasov. The Institute specializes in the integration of fundamental research and clinical practice to create effective and personalized treatment methods. The Institute's main areas of work include:

  • Development of original drugs, including first and next-in-class, as well as generic drugs.
  • Development of new dosage forms using nano- and liposomal technologies.
  • Research in the field of regenerative medicine, oncology and molecular medicine.
  • Application of artificial intelligence and bioinformatics for diagnostics and prognosis of diseases.

The Institute is actively involved in contract development of drugs, including orphan drugs, for pharmaceutical companies. It seeks to collaborate with organizations in the CIS countries to improve the efficiency of orphan drug development and consolidate efforts in this area. This approach helps to accelerate the creation of innovative drugs and improve the availability of treatment for patients with rare diseases.
